An original 1903-B British Trade Dollar, catalogued as KM#T5 and struck at the Bombay Mint for circulation in Britain's extensive trading sphere in East and Southeast Asia. The British Trade Dollar is one of the classic international silver trade coins of the late 19th and early 20th centuries and remains highly popular with collectors of British colonial and Asian numismatics.
Struck in .900 silver, the British Trade Dollar was introduced in 1895 primarily for use in territories including Hong Kong, the Straits Settlements and other commercial centres where large silver coins played an important role in regional trade. The B mintmark identifies this example as a Bombay Mint issue.
The obverse features the standing figure of Britannia facing left, holding a trident and a shield bearing the Union Jack, with a merchant sailing vessel visible in the background. The denomination ONE DOLLAR surrounds the central design, with the date 1903 below. An ornamental geometric border frames the composition.
The reverse carries the denomination within an elaborate decorative design, expressed in Chinese characters and Jawi script, reflecting the multicultural commercial environment for which these coins were produced. The combination of British, Chinese and Malay elements makes the Trade Dollar an especially distinctive example of imperial-era international currency.
This example displays attractive dark toning across both sides, with lighter high points providing strong contrast and clearly defining the intricate designs. It is an appealing circulated example of this substantial British colonial silver trade coin.
BOB 168
Condition VF
Very Fine condition. Circulated with moderate wear to the higher points of Britannia and the reverse design while retaining strong overall detail. The legends, date, denomination and decorative borders remain clearly defined. Numerous fine circulation marks, scratches and abrasions are visible across the fields, together with substantial dark toning and areas of lighter surface colour. The reverse retains particularly strong definition within the central characters and ornamental elements. Please examine the photographs carefully as they provide the best indication of condition.
