1912 Darmstadt to Frankfurt Germany - LZ 10 Schwaben Airship Zeppelin Flown Airmail Postcard Cover 22.06.1912.

On June 22, 1912, the airship LZ 10 Schwaben conducted airmail demonstration flights as part of the "Airmail on the Rhine and Main" (Flugpost am Rhein und am Main) event.

Key details about the day's activities:

  • Purpose: The Schwaben was the primary aircraft used during a two-week charity event (June 10-23, 1912) to raise funds for the Grand Ducal Head Office for Mother and Infant Welfare in Hesse.

  • Locations: On June 22, the airship made flights between Frankfurt and Darmstadt, carrying mail on both legs of the journey.

  • Mail Transport: Postcards and letters carried on this flight received special "Flugpost am Rhein u. am Main" cancellations and required special semi-official airmail stamps.

  • Pilot: The airship was frequently commanded by Dr. Hugo Eckener, who later became the president of the Zeppelin company.

  • The Schwaben's Fate: The airship was destroyed by fire six days later, on June 28, 1912, while moored in Düsseldorf during a gale.
