1912 Solid Silver Fob Shooting Medal to Corpl. Innes (Southern Rhodesia Volunteers).
An antique, solid silver presentation fob medal presented to Corporal Innes of the Southern Rhodesia Volunteers as a shooting award. As per other items on auction, A.J. Innes was a corporal in the Southern Rhodesian Volunteers in the early 20th Century. The medal obverse displays the British South Africa Company coat-of-arms and states "SOUTHERN RHODESIA RIFLE ASSOCIATION". The reverse is engraved "WON BY CPL. INNES, S.R.V. (W.D.)" [Southern Rhodesia Volunteers - Western District] and dated "1912". It also bears the silver hallmarks for London, 1912 and the 1908-1917 maker's stamp for Elkington & Co. In excellent condition with crisp, clear hallmarks.
The Southern Rhodesia Volunteers (SRV) were established in 1898 as a part-time militia in the British colony of Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). Composed primarily of European settlers, the unit was created to support the British South Africa Company (BSAC) in maintaining internal security and protecting settler interests. The SRV played an active role in regional conflicts, notably during the Second Boer War (18991902), where members served alongside British forces. They also took part in colonial campaigns such as the suppression of indigenous uprisings, including the Second Matabele War (or First Chimurenga) in the late 1890s.
Although the unit was relatively small, it reflected the broader militarization of white settler society and the colonial emphasis on maintaining control over local populations. The Southern Rhodesia Volunteers were eventually disbanded in the early 20th century, as the colony developed more formal military structures, including the establishment of the Rhodesia Regiment in 1914. Despite their brief existence, the SRV laid the groundwork for future settler-led military formations and contributed to the enduring legacy of militarized colonial rule in Southern Rhodesia.
I recently acquired a military collection representing 3 generations of the Innes family from Rhodesia.
A.J Innes was a corporal in the Southern Rhodesian Volunteers (Western District) in the early 1900's and received a number of silver shooting awards (2 spoons and a fob medal).
B. Innes participated in WW2 as per his dog tags and webbing belt.
K. Innes acquired a Rhodesian commemorative medallion in the 1990's.
