| Notes: | Field Marshal Horatio Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener (1850 - 1916) was Chief of Staff in the initial stages of the Boer War and succeeded Lord Roberts as commander-in-chief during the guerrilla phase. In 1914, at the start of the First World War, Lord Kitchener became Secretary of State for War. Kitchener was killed on 5 June 1916 when the armoured cruiser, HMS Hampshire, taking him to negotiations in Russia was sunk by a German mine. Kitchener's motto was, 'Thorough'. Julien Prosper Legastelois (1855 - 1931) was a french medallist living in Paris. |
