The History behind these rare coins is fascinating hence their collectable value as only 16000 were ever struck in a train coach parked on a siding using the gold from a small gold mine nearby which is still in existence today to pay the Askari soldiers during the First World War near Tabora in Tanzania depicting the Elephant and Mount Kilimanjaro in the background. Here I have 2 long curl variety and 1 short curl as they are known. Not sure how many have survived as they have been smelted down for cash by the Askari native soldiers. These coins are commonly compared to our Veld Pond that was minted in similar conditions. Only a handful have been graded by NGC but very few around in this condition.

Value in 2006: The 1916 Tabora Pound is highly sought after - now being sold for up to 10,000 Euro in Germany. Rarely seen on auction.

[1916 15 Rupee "Tabora Pound" Gold Coin] [1917 Interim Bank Notes - struck in the field]
