1917 BSA SMLE Mk III*

Deactivated Historic WWI Rifle

This listing is for a genuine World War I British Lee-Enfield SMLE Mk III* rifle, manufactured by the Birmingham Small Arms Company (B.S.A. Co.) in 1917. The rifle has been deactivated and is offered strictly as a non-functional historical collectible.

Historical Background

This rifle was produced at the height of World War I, during one of BSAs most intensive manufacturing periods. The SMLE Mk III* (Short Magazine Lee-Enfield) was the backbone of British and Commonwealth forces and is widely regarded as one of the most iconic military rifles of the 20th century. The Mk III* variant represented the simplified wartime pattern introduced in 1916 to speed production while maintaining strength and reliability.

Markings & Identification

The receiver is clearly stamped:

  • GR  George Rex (King George V)

  • B.S.A. Co.  Birmingham Small Arms Company

  • 1917  Year of manufacture

  • Sht. L.E III* Short Lee-Enfield Mk III* model designation

The rifle carries numerous original British military inspection and proof marks, including the traditional crossed flags, crown stamps, and factory acceptance symbols. These markings confirm its authenticity as a WWI-issued arm.

Serial Number

The rifles serial number is 49932, consistent with early-1917 BSA wartime production. The visible serials on receiver and bolt are from the same sequence, adding to its desirability as a matched, unrestored historical piece.

Configuration

Like many surplus Enfields released after service, this example was sporterized in the mid-20th centurylikely during the 1950s1970swhen these rifles were popularly converted for sporting use. The stock has been trimmed, and the original military nose cap and top handguard are no longer present. Despite this, the rifle retains its unmistakable SMLE profile, steelwork, and markings.

Condition

  • Fully deactivated (non-functional).

  • Metalwork shows age-appropriate patina but retains clear manufacturer stamps.

  • Wood is solid with visible signs of historical wear, adding character.

  • Bolt, receiver, and barrel markings remain clean and legible.

This rifle is ideal for collectors of WWI memorabilia, British military history, or Lee-Enfield variants. Its 1917 BSA origin makes it particularly appealing, as rifles from this period were widely used in major campaigns and remain highly sought after by enthusiasts.

Why This Rifle Stands Out

  • Authentic 1917 wartime manufacture

  • Produced by B.S.A., one of the most important British arms makers

  • Clear, matching serial characteristics

  • Richly stamped with original British proof and inspection marks

  • Fully deactivated safe for display, study, or collection

  • A genuine piece of WWI history with over a century of story behind it
