...THE TALE OF THE SPARROWS...
The lowest domination South Africa coins have two sparrows on the reverse side.
During the Anglo Boer War 1899-1902 a group woman held captive in the Bethulie concentration camp took the Bible verse Mathew 10:29 as their motto for survival.
"Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father"
They promised that they would try their best to get the two sparrow's as a symbol of their hope and believe as Christians printed on the reverse side on the lowest domination coins.
This was done starting from 1923 with the Farthings,1961 on the half cent and from 1965 on the 1c coins.
If you are interested to begin such a collection these coins could be a good start.
My own collections was started with this story.
