An original 1935 Southern Rhodesia Sixpence, catalogued as KM#2 and issued during the reign of King George V. This attractive colonial silver coin represents the early years of Southern Rhodesia's distinctive coinage, introduced in 1932.
Struck in .925 sterling silver, the Sixpence formed part of the pre-decimal currency system used in Southern Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe. The coin was issued during a period when the territory was a self-governing British colony, making it an interesting piece of southern African monetary history.
The obverse features the crowned left-facing portrait of King George V, surrounded by the inscription GEORGE V KING EMPEROR. The portrait was designed by Bertram Mackennal and reflects the monarch's status as King of the United Kingdom and Emperor of India.
The reverse displays two crossed elephant tusks with the denomination 6 PENCE beneath and the date 1935 divided on either side of the tusks. The surrounding inscription reads SOUTHERN RHODESIA, with the initials KG appearing above the crossed tusks.
The crossed elephant tusks became one of the most recognisable symbols of Southern Rhodesian coinage, reflecting the wildlife and regional identity of the territory.
An appealing example for collectors of Rhodesiana, British colonial silver coins, King George V coinage and historical African currency.
