Official commemorative medal issued to South African schoolchildren to mark the Coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth on 12 May 1937.
The obverse shows the conjoined crowned busts of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth with the inscription KING CORONATION 1251937. The reverse features a lion standing before a mountainous landscape beneath a rising sun, surrounded by the inscription VAN SUID-AFRIKA UNION OF SOUTH AFRICA UNIE VAN SUID-AFRIKA.
These medals were commonly distributed through schools across South Africa as keepsakes of the Coronation celebrations and are now sought after by collectors of South African historical memorabilia, royal commemoratives and school medals.
A very attractive example retaining much of its original golden-bronze finish. Light age-related wear and minor surface marks are present, while the attached original suspension ring and safety pin remain intact.
