Coin collectors who specialize in the area of South African Tokens know that Tommy Sasseen has an interesting link with numismatics, ( the collecting of coins), he was the official engraver at the SA mint between 1950 and 1974. As described by Dr Theron (1978), Tommy Sasseen's father owned a company in Pretoria, Sasseen & Co, which handled the sale of grapes consigned from the Cape. This company later became the sole agent for the Deciduous Fruit Board. Sasseen & Co had tokens struck at the Mint in 1938 and these were used as deposits on bushel baskets in which the grapes were transported. Dr Theron mentioned that these tokens are very rare and by the time he wrote his book, the only three tokens he had ever seen were the three specimens in the Africana Museum. Source: Francois Malan
