An original 1940 Italian 2 Lire coin, catalogued as KM#78, issued during the reign of King Vittorio Emanuele III and the Fascist period under Benito Mussolini.
This coin belongs to the Empire series introduced following Italy's proclamation of an empire in 1936. The 1940 issue carries the dual dating 1940 and XVIII, the latter indicating the eighteenth year of the Fascist Era. The R mintmark identifies the Rome Mint.
The obverse features the right-facing portrait of King Vittorio Emanuele III, surrounded by the inscription VITTORIO EMANUELE III RE E IMP, meaning King and Emperor. The engraver's name G. ROMAGNOLI appears beneath the portrait.
The reverse displays a prominent eagle with outstretched wings standing upon a fasces, an emblem associated with the Fascist government. The design is enclosed within a wreath, with ITALIA above, the date 1940 and Fascist year XVIII below, and the denomination L.2 at the bottom.
This issue was produced in Acmonital, a stainless-steel alloy, with magnetic and non-magnetic varieties recognised by collectors. As this particular coin has not been tested with a magnet, its magnetic properties and corresponding variety remain unconfirmed.
An interesting example of Italian coinage from the Second World War period, appealing to collectors of Vittorio Emanuele III, Fascist-era Italy, European historical currency and world coins.
