An original 1945 Netherlands East Indies 1 Cent, issued during the reign of Queen Wilhelmina. Catalogued as KM#317, this distinctive holed coin comes from the final years of Dutch colonial rule in the East Indies.
Struck in bronze, the obverse carries the inscription NEDERLANDSCH INDIE, the date 1945 and denomination 1 C, together with a decorative plant motif surrounding the central hole.
The reverse presents the denomination and identification of the territory in Javanese and Arabic-derived Jawi script, reflecting the diverse languages and cultures of the Netherlands East Indies. Floral elements complete the design around the central perforation.
The 1945 issue dates from a particularly important period in Indonesian history. Following the end of the Second World War and Japanese occupation, Indonesian independence was proclaimed in August 1945, beginning a period of conflict and political transition that ultimately ended Dutch colonial rule.
An interesting historical coin for collectors of Netherlands East Indies, Dutch colonial, Indonesian, Asian and world coinage.
