Original 1948 British One Penny, featuring the left-facing portrait of King George VI, with the Latin legend GEORGIVS VI D:G: BR: OMN: REX F:D: IND: IMP.
The reverse depicts Britannia seated, holding her trident and shield a timeless design used on British pennies since 1860.

This was one of the last large bronze pennies before Britain switched to smaller coinage post-1970. The 1948 issue is popular among collectors due to its mid-century minting and historical link to the British Commonwealth, including South Africa.

Specifications:

  • Country: Great Britain

  • Year: 1948

  • Denomination: One Penny (1d)

  • Obverse: King George VI, crowned bust left

  • Reverse: Britannia seated with trident and shield

  • Composition: Bronze

  • Weight: ±9.45 g

  • Diameter: ±30.8 mm

  • Edge: Plain

  • Mint: Royal Mint, London

  • Condition: Fine to Very Fine (even detail, minor discoloration from age, light corrosion spot)

Historical Note:
The 1948 British penny was struck just after World War II, during a period of post-war recovery across the Commonwealth. While not part of South Africas official Union coinage (which began in 1923), British bronze pennies of this era were occasionally found in circulation locally due to Commonwealth trade and returning servicemen.
