Offered here is a 1949 South Africa 5 Shillings coin featuring King George VI on the obverse and the springbok design on the reverse. This impressive crown-sized coin is an early post-war issue, struck in .500 silver, and represents one of the last large silver coins produced under British rule in South Africa.


Obverse: Portrait of King George VI facing left, with the Latin legend GEORGIVS SEXTVS REX.


Reverse: The iconic springbok antelope, designed by Coert Steynberg, with the bilingual inscription SOUTH AFRICA SUID-AFRIKA and the denomination 5 SHILLINGS below.
