Portuguese Mozambique was a former Portuguese colony in what is now Mozambique. The country was colonized from 1498 to 1975. Until 1951, the country was known as Portuguese East Africa, which included several colonies. It was then unified as the Ultramarine Province of Mozambique, before finally being renamed the State of Mozambique in 1972.
