1959 SANAE I Registered Antarctic Expedition First Day Cover.

Dated 11.I. A60 you are looking at an incredibly historic milestone cancel that represents the pinnacle of South African polar postal history.

While the envelope was initially prepared or pre-stamped ahead of time in December, the 11 January 1960 date marks the actual FDI of the Establishment of the Queen Maud Land Base (Norway Station).

8 January 1960: The Norwegian sealing vessel Polarbjørn, carrying the inaugural South African expedition team led by pioneer meteorologist Hannes la Grange, officially breached the pack ice and reached the frozen Antarctic coast.

11 January 1960: Just three days after landing, the team formally took over the abandoned Norwegian research facility in Queen Maud Land. This day marks the official birth of SANAE 1, establishing a permanent, uninterrupted South African scientific footprint on the polar continent.

The Postal Processing: The hand-stamp was updated to January 11th on-site at the ice shelf station to legally validate that this batch of mail was handled precisely on the day South Africa took over operational control.

Because it documents the exact day the physical polar base was established rather than the generalized mission departure window, this specific 11.1.1960 cancellation date carries a significant premium among global polar history specialists.
