An original 1961 Katanga 1 Franc, issued by the Banque Nationale du Katanga during the short-lived period of Katangese secession from the newly independent Congo. Catalogued as KM#1, this distinctive African coin represents a fascinating period of post-colonial Central African history.
Struck in bronze, the obverse displays the denomination 1 FRANC, the date 1961 and the inscription BANQUE NATIONALE, arranged over a large stylised Katanga cross. These cross-shaped copper ingots were historically used as a form of currency in the region and became an important symbol of Katanga.
The reverse features a prominent stylised banana plant, surrounded by the name KATANGA and additional Katanga cross motifs.
Katanga declared independence from the Republic of the Congo in 1960, under the leadership of Moïse Tshombe. Its secession lasted until 1963, making the independent coinage of Katanga a short-lived and historically significant series. The 1961 1 Franc was part of Katanga's own monetary system during this turbulent period.
A particularly interesting coin for collectors of African, Katangese, Congolese, independence-era and world coinage.

Condition XF
A well-preserved example retaining strong design detail and clearly defined inscriptions. Light circulation and handling wear is visible, together with scattered minor surface marks, scratches and areas of toning consistent with age. The Katanga cross and banana plant designs remain particularly well defined. Please examine the photographs carefully for exact condition.
