1966 RARE TAG-EAR/ERROR SPRINGBOK SILVER ONE RAND (Progressive Indirect Design Transfer)
1966 SOUTH AFRICA SILVER ONE RAND TAG-EAR SPRINGBOK VARIETY
(PROGRESSIVE INDIRECT DESIGN TRANSFER VARIETY)
The 1966 South African Silver One Rand is struck in 80% silver and features the iconic leaping springbok designed by Coert Steynberg. This example displays the well-known Tag-Ear variety, believed by specialists to result from a Progressive Indirect Design Transfer (PIDT) during die manufacture. The variety appears as a distinct tag- or flap-like projection extending from the springboks ear, created by an anomaly in the master hub or working die rather than by post-mint damage.
Unlike die cracks or circulation marks, the Tag-Ear feature is raised, consistent across affected examples, and recognized by South African variety collectors as a genuine mint-produced die variety. As the die continued in service, the feature often became more pronounced, making stronger examples especially desirable.
