Here in gorgeous Cherry Red with aged front and back binding, this guitar was featured on Page 17 of the book - "Ibanez, the Untold Story". She's not just a looker - she's also got perky hot toaster pickups! At one point she had a Bigsby type tremolo, but the arm has been lost to time. She has a number of dings, scuffs and wear and tear but is still quite the looker for her age.
THE STORY BEHIND JAPANESE LAWSUIT GUITARS
The quality manufacturing of guitars synonymous with the 60's era - Gibson's Les Paul and SG, Fender's Strat and Tele and Rickenbacker's 360 - was beginning to decline. The attention to detail, superior parts and craftsmanship diminished while price tags remained high.
Enter Harry Rosenbloom whose company Elger Guitars became the American distributor for Japanese guitar makers, Hoshino Gakki Gen. Hoshino began importing classical guitars from a small Spanish guitar maker Salvador Ibanez in the 1920's to sell in Japan and went on to launch their own brand under the name Ibanez in 1935. In 1971 Hoshino became profitable enough to purchase Elger Guitars from Rosenbloom and officially changed their name to Ibanez, USA.
Ibanez achieved success when it began making copies of famous guitars in the late 60's who all filed lawsuits against Ibanez which were mostly settled out of court by the Hoshino Corporation. The crux of the story is that a lot of instruments claim to be "lawsuit" era guitars but simply aren't. The only genuine "lawsuit" guitars are the Ibanez models predating the use of serial numbers. They mostly originated out of the FujiGen Gakki plant in Japan and were imported to the USA.
This super rare classic lady is well into her fifties and proudly carries the authentic "lawsuit" guitar title making her highly desirable to collectors.
