The Obverse of the 1 R and 2 R coins depict the face of Jan Van Riebeeck and the Reverse the Springbok.

These coins were minted in honour of Jan Van Riebeeck who arrived in Table Mountain ( now Cape Town ) South Africa from Holland in 1652. He was the commander of Table Bay for 10 years from 1652 to 1662.
