Composition | Copper-nickel (cupronickel). It does not contain silver, despite the Silver Jubilee name. |
Shape | Dodecagonal (12-sided). |
Mintages | Over 25 million circulated coins. Also: approx. 128,000 in brilliant uncirculated mint set condition, and ~55,000 proof strikes. |
Even though the Silver Jubilee coin is fairly common overall, there are a few rarities and peculiar varieties collectors watch for:
Mint error / mule coin: A 1977 50c that has the normal Coat of Arms reverse rather than the Jubilee reverse (i.e. the wrong back for that year). These are extremely rare (only a handful known).
Proof specimens: The proof-version coins are scarcer.
Uncirculated in mint sets: These are a middle ground between proofs and normal circulation. Better condition, less wear.
