1984 Australian 1 Dollar coin featuring Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse and kangaroos on the reverse.

Prior to 1984, Australia had a $1 banknote in circulation.

In May 1984, the Royal Australian Mint replaced the $1 note with a new $1 coin to:

Reduce costs (coins last much longer than notes),

Modernize the currency,

Reflect Australias unique national identity.

First-ever $1 coin issued in Australia.

Introduced a new metal and design style.

Designed by Stuart Devlin, also responsible for many modern Australian coin reverses.

Marks a major shift in Australian currency policy from paper to coins for daily denominations.

  • Mintage (1984): Over 186 million coins

  • As the first year of issue, its historically significant but not rare due to high mintage.

  • Coins were released into circulation, mint sets, and collector issues.
