Australian $1 Coin
The introduction of a $1 coin into the Australian currency is an important event as the replacement of a $1 bank note is the first major change to Australia's circulating decimal coinage since 1966. The coin has several distinctive features:
It has a Golden colour which distinguishes it from cupro-nickel or bronze coins;`
- the coin is thicker compared to other coins of similar diameter
- the edge, comprised of seven plain and seven milled segments, makes the new coin distinctive visually and to the touch.
However, the unusual edge design does not inhibit the coin's ability to roll, so that it can be used in vending machines.
All these features are significant in distinguishing a coin of high value from other denominations.
THE REVERSE DESIGN:
By featuring the KANGAROO, continues the Australian fauna theme of current circulating coinage. The Kangaroo is Australia's best known native animal, and is instantly identifiable with Australia. Its ability to hop long distances and jump high obstacles has made this marsupial world famous.
It is seen in this picture with its "Joey" as the immature young kangaroo is often called, in its pouch.

The effigy of Queen Elizabeth II which appears on all Australian coins was designed by Mr Arnold Machin, O.B.E.,R.A.
YOUR UNCIRCULATED COIN
This coin has not been in circulation. It was made by mass production methods and examined to ensure that surface defects are minimal. Although packed to retain its new coin lustre, coins normally lose this lustre over a period of years.
The packaging is as shown above, however the coin is in mint condition.
