The South African Mint Protea series was initially launched in 1986 with the celebration of the Centenary of Johannesburg. Joburg, the city's famous nickname, is the largest city in South Africa, but is none of the actual three capital cities.
The city was founded in 1886 following the discovery of Gold on an old farm. It is commonly interpreted as the modern day El Dorado.
