In 1987-1988 Portugal started issuing a series of 4 coins Proof Prestige Sets comprising 4 different metals: Gold, Platinum, Palladium and Silver. The central theme of these prestige proof sets was the era when portuguese navigators were leading the world in discovering new land and was themed: “THE GOLDEN AGE OF PORTUGUESE DISCOVERIES”.
Series I marks the 500th anniversary of the rounding of Cape of Good Hope by Bartolomeu Dias in 1488.
This set is a series I. One of the very first sets minted, low mintage, and is very rare and prestigious. These sets have been branded as (The Very High Quality Coins)
