In 1987-1988 Portugal started issuing a series of 4 coins Proof Prestige Sets comprising 4 different metals: Gold, Platinum, Palladium and Silver. The central theme of these prestige proof sets was the era when portuguese navigators were leading the world in discovering new land and was themed: “THE GOLDEN AGE OF PORTUGUESE DISCOVERIES”

Series I marks the 500th anniversary of the rounding of Cape of Good Hope by Bartolomeu Dias in 1488
