1988 - Proof Gold Protea 3 Coin Set - DIAS, LES HUGUENOTS & GROOT TREK Graded, Slabed and Certified by South African Gold Coin Exchange.
 

On my younger days I was a Numismatic Collector and from 1982 to 1994 I was on the Preferred Collectors' List of South African Mint. I am the Original Owner of all coins and sets I am listing on Bidorbuy and all are guaranteed as such.
 

Dias:  Bartolomeu Dias, the first European to sail around the Cape of Good Hope in 1488, also found that India was reachable by sailing around the coast of the continent. As a result, trade with Asia and India was made considerably easier because travellers would no longer have to travel through the Middle East by land. Portuguese navigaters were at the time the kings of the seas.
 

Les Huguenots:  In December 1687 a group of Huguenots set sail from France as the first of the large scale emigration of Huguenots to the Cape of Good Hope, which took place during 1688 and 1689. In total some 198 Huguenots from France settled at the Cape of Good Hope.
 

Groot Trek:  In January 1832 Dr. Andrew Smith, an Englishman, and a Boer farmer, William Berg, were sent by the Boer leaders to investigate Natal for potential settlement. On their return to the Cape, Dr. Smith was very enthusiastic and the impact of discussions William Berg had with the Boers proved crucial. Berg reported that Natal was a land of exceptional farming quality, well watered and nearly devoid of inhabitants. And so the Groot Trek started.
