The Game Boy is a fourth-generation 8-bit handheld video game system developed and manufactured by Nintendo. Released in Japan on April 21, 1989, in North America in October 1989, and in Europe on September 28, 1990, it was the first handheld console in the Game Boy line. It was designed by Gunpei Yokoi and Nintendo Research & Development 1 - the same team that designed the Game and Watch series and many successful games for the Nintendo Entertainment System. Despite the release of more technically advanced handheld consoles, the Game Boy was a huge success. The Game Boy and Game Boy Color models totalled 118.6 million units sold worldwide. Upon its release in the United States, more than one million copies were sold in a few weeks. Production of the handheld console was completed in 2003
