riginal 1990 South Africa 1 Rand (R1) commemorative coin, issued by the South African Mint to mark the end of State President P.W. Bothas presidency and the beginning of F.W. de Klerks leadership.

This historic transitional coin features P.W Botha on the obverse symbolizing political change in South Africa while the reverse retains the Springbok antelope design and the motto SOLI DEO GLORIA (Glory to God Alone).

It represents the final year of the large nickel R1 series before the coin was redesigned and downsized in 1991. Collectors value it as the last of its type and for its strong political significance.
