An interesting 1991 Gold Reef City 5 Shillings token, struck in aluminium and featuring a design strongly associated with South Africa's historic gold-mining and Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek era.
The obverse features a detailed portrait of Paul Kruger, former President of the South African Republic, surrounded by a beaded border.
The reverse depicts an ostrich at centre, surrounded by the inscription GOLD REEF CITY, denomination 5 SHILLINGS, and the date 1991, all within a beaded border.
Issued as a token rather than official South African legal-tender coinage, pieces such as this form an interesting part of the exonumia associated with Gold Reef City in Johannesburg, the mining-themed attraction established around the historic Crown Mines area. The combination of the Kruger portrait, old-style shilling denomination and period-inspired design gives the token considerable South African historical character.
A collectible piece for enthusiasts of South African tokens, exonumia, mining memorabilia, Gold Reef City souvenirs and Paul Kruger-related material.
