1991 Rams Head fifty cent coin 50c 25th Anniversary Royal Australian Mint-Decimal Change Over from pounds, shillings and pence to dollars and cents which officially occurred on 14 February 1966. Australia transitioned from the British-style £sd (pounds, shillings, pence) to the decimal dollar system in 1966. The original 50 cent coin introduced in 1966 was round and made of 80% silver, featuring the famous Merino Rams Head design by George Kruger Gray (borrowed from the pre-decimal shilling). It revived a beloved pre-decimal design (the Rams Head) as a nod to Australias currency heritage. Celebrates the "Decimal Changeover" a major national milestone. A limited mintage of just under 5 million makes it more collectible than standard circulation coins. |
