Portuguese navigators reached Japan in 1543, the first Europeans to land there. In 1993 the Portuguese mint honoured the 450^th anniversary of this great event with this four coins, and also into 2000 sets, in its discovery series. For the first time in European coinage, the legends on the coins was struck in both in Japanese and Portuguese.
