Stiff illustrated boards. A handbook devised to give guidance to the repair and restoration of the surviving early Colonial public and domestic buildings of Port Elizabeth. British settlers began to arrive in significant numbers around 1820, and in the next twenty years evolved the style of architecture also found in slightly modified forms in contemporary Australia and New Zealand. It is a style, or evolving styles of architecture through the 19th. century which has largely been swept away, and the object of the book was to bring attention of City planners and ordinary citizens what was being lost. The building styles used through the century are classified. and numerous sketches help identification of the characteristics of Colonial Regency, for example, together with the identification of period details. Loosely inserted are a facsimile of a portion of a builders goods list dated 1897, and a selection of products available from a modern equivalent company.
