"Though not officially named Herrengracht until the middle of the eighteenth century, the link between Van Riebeeck's old fortress and vegatable gardens was from the very beginning of the Cape settlement the " walk" taken by the gentlemen of the Dutch East India Company for the pursuit of their commercial and social activities. Round ths GENLTLEMAN'S WALK the town was built-initially reluctantly, afterwards with a purpose. The gist of the story has been told when in 1850 Heerengracht became Adderley Street and as such was not a gentleman's walk any longer ."
