Darlingtonia californica Seeds
Cobra Lily - Cobra Plant - California Pitcher Plant
Darlingtonia californica is one the most spectacular and unusual looking carnivorous plants available. It has tall and twisted tubular hooded pitchers that resemble cobra snakes, complete with forked tongue. In the wild pitchers can grow to over 1 meter, in cultivation expect a maximum height of about 60cm for mature plants. Flowers are deep red. The Cobra Lily tongue and mouth secrete sweet nectar that lures the insects to the plant. Insects enter through a hole below the puffed heads, become trapped and disoriented then fall to the bottom of the tubes where they are dissolved by bacteria and microorganisms. The Cobra Lily is native to northern California and southern Oregon where it grows in a cool climate; it is found in boggy areas where it is provided constant cool water to its roots. Darlingtonia californica requires high light and cool root temperatures. Soil temperatures must be kept below 21 degrees Celsius for survival. Darlingtonia californica is undoubtedly one of the coolest looking plants on the planet. Highly recommended for any serious carnivorous plant collector.
