This novel is centred around the lives of a handful of members of Alcoholics anonymous in Bellville in the Cape. Elna is an organiser - principled yet tolerant, and dedicated to the cause after a promiscuous drinking life. Jim dates her daughter. He is a lovable oaf who works as a barman but is generally unreliable and hasn't stopped drinking. Robert is a lonely yet contented middle-aged man. He lives a decent and modest life, working as a street parking attendant. He likes sitting around all night in Voortrekker Road cafes drinking coffee. So far, love hasn't found him there. These and other people live small, mostly quiet lives driven or haunted by past events.
