Tylecodon a new genus published in 1978 by Tolken, is distinguished from cotyledon by its deciduous leaves which are spirally arranged.

Unlike both Adromischus and Cotyledon the peduncle makes a gradual transistion from leaves to bracts.

Tylecodon range from shrublets a few centimeters high to branched shrubs almost 2 meters high. For the pachycaul/caudex fan there is at lot to chose from in this genus. Most Tylecodons are poisonous and care should be used when handling. Farmers and stockmen in habitat routinely remove every Tylecodon they can find.
They are toxic to livestock (cardiotoxicoses) and are the cause of a significant number of poisonings yearly.
