 Nelson Mandela remains one of the world's most revered

Statesman, who led the struggle to replace the apartheid regime of

South Africa with a multiracial democracy 

During  27 years in prison he became the world's most famous political prisoner. After a long campaign of resistance within South Africa and political and economic pressure from without, President F. W. de Klerk ended the government ban on the ANC and freed Mandela in 1990 and he became president of the ANC. For years he worked tirelessly to negotiate an end to apartheid and minority rule, gaining widespread respect and support in the process. In April 1994 Nelson Mandela was elected and inaugurated as the first Black president of South Africa.
