To commemorate the inauguration of the newly formed Republiek in 1874 and the appointment of Thomas Francois Burgers as the first President of the ZAR Republiek, a special gold coin was minted to celebrate this occasion. 837 of these gold coins or Ponde, were minted which is very low indeed. However, it was only-some 70 years later that it was discovered that 2 types of these coins were actually minted... the Course Beard and Fine Beard variety.
In fact, the mintage of the Fine Beard was 695 and the Course Beard 142, even more scarce than originally believed, and their values are R150,000 and R.300,000 respectively..... are these the Kruger millions?
To commemorate the 130th Anniversary of this event, and the first South African gold coin, we have minted a special gold set that includes both of these scarce and highly desirable coins.... the Course Beard and the Fine Beard Ponde.
At the same time, to commemorate the anniversary of the death of Paul Kruger 100 years ago in 1904, we have included the world famous Proof Krugerrand together with the 2 Burgers Ponde in this special set

A brief history of the Krugerrand in South Africa

The discovery of the main gold reef in1886 in the Johannesburg area changed the history of South Africa. No other event in the nineteenth century has such an impact on the political and economic history of South Africa. The shimmering beauty of gold captured the country. On the 3rd of July 1967 the first 22 carat gold Krugerrand was struck at the South African Mint and became the world’s first ounce-denominated gold coin. In 1980 the fractional Krugerrands, 1 / 2 oz, 1 / 4oz and 1 / 10 oz, were issued. As the world’s most recognized gold coin and a well established South African brand name, the Krugerrand remains one of most sought after coins in the numismatic market today.
