The year 2004 marks the beginning of yet another era in South African coinage with the introduction of South Africas first bi-metal circulation coin, the 2004 R5.
A limited quantity of mintmark R5 coins were minted on Oom Paul, one of the oldest working mint presses in the world. Oom Paul is housed in Coin World at the South African Mint Company. Hence the mintmark features a miniature mint press and the letters CW (Coin World).
The original Black Wildebeest design, together with the number 5 and the word RAND is featured on the reverse of the coin. On the obverse, the South African Coat-of-Arms is featured with the year 2004. The Xitsonga words Afrika Dzonga and the siSwati words Ningizimu Afrika (both meaning South Africa) are also depicted.
Various complex security features such as the miniature lettering SARB (South African Reserve Bank) and the edge groove featuring the letters SARB R5, have been incorporated into the design of this new R5 coin.
