The silver R1 series is one of South Africa's most interesting and longest-running coin series. After the introduction of the nickel R1 in 1977, the silver R1 continued to be minted, mostly in proof form, and often featuring beautiful commemorative designs.
The year 1991 saw the introduction of the Protea R1 series, which continues to this day. The Protea series coins are sterling silver (0.925), and has a silver content of 13.875gm, up from the 12.00gm of the prior years.
This 2007 issue features Archbishop Desmond Tutu as part of the Nobel Peace Prize Laureates series.
The coin on sale is a beautiful proof specimen, graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) of the U.S. as a PF69 (out of a possible 70), indicative of nearly flawless quality. The Ultra Cameo designation denotes a coin that has a fully frosted design and completely reflective fields.
