In 2008 the South African Mint struck a very special Limited Issue Natura Launch Mintmark solid 24 carat Gold Proof 4 coin collection.
The collection includes the 100 One Hundred Rand Coin weighing one ounce of pure gold to commemorate the Elephant with a special "SAM" mintmark, the 50 Fifty Rand Coin weighing one half ounce of fine gold, the 20 Twenty Rand coin weighing one quarter of an ounce of fine gold and finally the 10 Ten Rand coin weighing one tenth of an ounce of fine gold all which are part of the Giants of Africa series.
All the coins have been graded and slabbed by NGC as PF70 which is the highest grade in proof coins.
On the reverse of the 100 One Hundred Rand Natura a lonebull is featured.
On the obverse a portrait of a matriarch is depicted.
The mintmark on the obverse of the coin depicts a 100 year old fly-press and the letters "SAM".
A Mintmark Natura coin was ceremoniously struck on the fly-press by a tame African Elephant, saved from being culled 25 years ago. This is the only coin that has ever been struck by an elephant to celebrate its own species.
These legal tender coins have been struck to proof quality using specially prepared dies and highly polished blanks.
