2009 D William Henry Harrison presidential dollar as per images.Diameter of 26.50mm, 9th president 1841.Please note the mark on the reverse.

William Henry Harrison, the ninth U.S. President, died just 32 days into his term on April 4, 1841, becoming the first president to die in office and serving the shortest tenure in history. After delivering a long inaugural address in cold, wet weather without a coat, he developed pneumonia, or possibly enteric fever, caused by the unsanitary conditions in Washington.

  • Inauguration & Illness: On March 4, 1841, Harrison delivered the longest inaugural address in history (nearly two hours) in 48-degree Fahrenheit weather. He developed a cold three weeks later, which worsened into pneumonia.
  • Medical Treatment: Doctors used outdated, intense treatments including bloodletting, blistering, and Native American "remedies," which weakened him further, according to and reported by.
  • Cause of Death: While traditionally attributed to pneumonia caused by the weather exposure, some analyses suggest he died of enteric fever (typhoid) due to contaminated water in the White House.
  • Impact: His death prompted a constitutional crisis, resolved when Vice President John Tyler took the oath of office, confirming the Vice President's role as president, not just acting president. He was the last president to be born a British subject and was buried in North Bend, Ohio.
