2010 FIFA World Cup Soccer R2 Sterling Silver Crown Collectors Coin
On 15 May 2004 at the World Trade Centre in Zurich, South Africa was announced as the next country to host the FIFA World Cup¿
in 2010, a first ever for the continent of Africa!
64 matches will be played in 10 stadiums in 9 South African cities from 8 Provinces, from 11 June ¿ 11 July 2010. A pure gold and
silver commemorative coin series has been manufactured to capture this historical event.
The designs on these gold and silver coins, while depicting typical football images, remain truly South African by featuring
symbols and elements derived from the various host stadium¿s Provinces coat-of arms and from the South African coat-of-arms.
The 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa¿ coin series commenced in 2006 with two coins, a R2 (1/4 oz pure gold) coin and a R2
sterling silver crown. A R1 (1/10th oz pure gold) coin was added in 2007 and the three-coin series continued until 2009. To
celebrate the actual year of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa¿, a 1 oz pure gold coin with the denomination of R200 has been
added to the 2010 coin series.
The Offcial Trophy and the designation of the FIFA World Cup¿, together with the coins¿ denomination are featured as the main
design in the centre of each coin. The various elements within the outer circle of the coins have the following significance:
The R1 (1/10th oz) coin depicts South African national symbols and coat-of-arms. The King Protea flower is the national flower of
South Africa and the elephants represent the tusks from the coat-of-arms. The Western Cape and Eastern Cape Provinces are
represented on the R2 (1/4 oz) coin and on the R2 sterling silver crown. On the R2 (1/4 oz) coin the Eland, Cape Aloe and the Sun
rays are symbols from the Eastern Cape coat-of-arms. The Bontebok, grapes and Protea flower represent the Western Cape. The
Cape Dutch architecture above the trophy is typical of the Cape regions. The R2 sterling silver crown features grapes and the
Qwagga which represent the Western Cape and the Eland and the Cape Aloe which represent the Eastern Cape. The anchor under
the Cape Dutch gable represents the maritime history of both provinces which border the Atlantic and Indian Ocean. On the R200
(1 oz) reverse, the well known Union Buildings represents the seat of Government in the capital of South Africa, Pretoria. The
Secretarybirds are derived from South Africa¿s official coat-of-arms.
The year in which the coins were issued, the South African coat-of-arms and the word South Africa (written in all official languages
on the R2 crown) are featured on the obverse of each coin.
These coins are sold as individual coins and as a set of coins named ¿The 2010 Collectors¿ Set¿.
