MASERU – King Letsie III on Wednesday commended the Central Bank of Lesotho (CBL) for designing the new maloti banknotes, which he said helped maintain the image and credibility of the country.
The King made the comment when the notes were presented to him and Queen ’Masenate Seeiso by the CBL Governor Dr Moeketsi Senaoana, at the Royal Palace in Maseru.
He urged the public to use the money accordingly and to also respect its security features.
The King also expressed appreciation to the CBL for the gifts presented to him and Queen ’Masenate Seeiso.
Briefing the King about the design of the new banknotes to be introduced, Dr Senaoana said the banknotes have tight security features which could not be forged.
He said the CBL decided to introduce new banknotes after observing the technology used to design the currently circulating currency was too old.
Dr Senaoana also indicated the 1980-designed notes posed a serious challenge to the bank as there had been some attempts to forge it by fraudsters.
The governor said the new money would start circulating from March this year, adding before then, it will be introduced to the police, financial institutions and the business community so they could identify its security features as part of efforts to prevent its counterfeiting by fraudsters.
The CBL launched the new banknotes in November last year during its 30th anniversary celebration in Maseru.
The new notes have a unique rough fee to it and also bear the key features of Moshoeshoe I, the late King Moshoeshoe II and King Letsie III.
Present at Wednesday’s occasion included the Minister of Finance and Development Planning, Dr Timothy Thahane and the CBL staff. – LENA
