A one-year-only issue from South Africa's world-renowned Protea Series, this official legal tender release pays homage to one of the nation's most important literary figures – John Coetzee. An academic, novelist, literary critic and translator, Coetzee was born in Capetown, South Africa in 1940. A leading figure in the battle against Apartheid, Coetzee was the first person to win the Booker Prize twice (1983 & 1999) and, in 2003, became the fourth African writer to win the Noble Prize for Literature. After working in the USA, Coetzee took up residence in Australia. He currently resides in Adelaide, which is why the South African Mint chose the South Australian capital for the launch of this beautifully designed BU Silver 1 Rand tribute to Coetzee. Bearing a fine depiction of this giant of South African literature, the Royal Australian Mint were asked by the South African Mint to add an even greater Australian flavour to the release, with an 'A' for Adelaide counterstamped upon every coin!
