South Africasfirst bi-metal circulation coin, the R5, was introduced in the year 2004 and marked the beginning of a new era in South African coinage history. In 2012 a limited quantity of mintmark R5 coins were minted on Oom Paul, one of the oldest working mint presses in the world. Oom Paul is housed in Coin World at the South African Mint Company. Hence the mintmark features a miniature mint press and the letters CW (Coin World). The original Black Wildebees design, together with the number 5 and the word RAND are featured on the reverse of the coin. On the obverse, the South African coat of arms is featured with the year 2012. The isiZulu words iNingizimu Afrika and the isiXhosa words uMzantsi Africa, meaning South Africa are also depicted. Various complex security features such as the miniature lettering SARB (South African Reserve Bank) and the edge rimming featuring the letters SARB R5, have been incorporated into the design of this new R5 coin.
