Coin Highlights:
Britannia coins in their modern incarnation were not introduced until 1987 in gold, and 1997 in silver. However, the image of Britannia and its use on British coins dates back more than 300 years to the formation of a unified United Kingdom between Britain, Scotland, and Ireland.
The image of Britannia and her place in British culture date back even further, approximately 2,000 years to the arrival of Roman soldiers on the British Isles. Britannia was originally the name of the isles and the inhabitants in Latin, given to the region by the conquering Romans. Over time, Britannia came to hold status as a goddess of sorts, representing the protective nature of Britain.
The 2016 silver coins feature .999 pure silver.
On the reverse side of each coin is the image of Britannia, the guardian of the British Isles. She is featured with a trident in her right hand, a Corinthian helmet upon her head, and a shield in her left hand with the Union Jack emblazoned on it as she stands ready to defend Britain.
The obverse features the latest depiction of Queen Elizabeth II. The nations longest serving monarch, Queen Elizabeth IIs image has been updated for the first time since 1998. This fifth-generation depiction of the Queen was created by Jody Clark and unveiled in July 2015.
