The world changed forever on 3 July 1967 when the first Krugerrand was minted. Since then the iconic gold Krugerrand has gone on to conquer the world. By 1980 Krugerrands represented 90% of the global gold coin market.
The Krugerrand remained largely unchanged throughout the years, its obverse depicts the bust of President Paul Kruger by artist Otto Schultz and the reverse depicts a prancing springbok, originally designed and engraved by the famous South African sculptor Coert Steynberg.
However, to mark the 50th anniversary of this landmark moment in history, the South African Mint has introduced a world first by making Silver Krugerrands.
