Very Scarce Sets to Find
This is a very sought after release by the SA MINT and ironically also the last ever Nelson Mandela Commemorative Coin Set to be released by the SA MINT. As Received from the SA MINT. Sold directly at the Coin World Shop.
There was a total of 123 x PFCA coins graded and 1 x PFUC (Total Coins Graded = 124). Of the 2018 Nelson Mandela Centenary R5 proof coins there is a mere 43 x PFUC coins graded and 3 x PFCA (Total Coins Graded = 46). These stats of the 2018 Nelson Mandela R5 Proof coins have stayed the same since 2018. There is only 7 x graded PF70UC coins at NGC. Two local sales were on BOB of these 7 PF70UC's R5's - the first ever graded set of all 3 coins together in PF70UC sold for R15 000, the other graded NGC R5 on its own sold for just over R17 000. The Mandela ungraded sets sold for R5000-R6500 each on the secondary market and by dealers and on auctions. Only a handful of first release sets that got out to dealers and some collectors got onto the market and then nothing again from the SA MINT or any explanation on what happened to all of the sets as only around 50-100 speculatively made it out onto the public market. OR TAMBO PF69CA R5 coins sell for around R2500 each and the sets R2000-R2500. The Mandela sets rarely ever pop up for sale and/or auction however the Proof R5 PF69UC's sell for around R5000-R6500 each when listed. OR Tambo sets have been available since 2017 easily and BOB has some listed right now and other single graded coins. You rarely see any of the Nelson Mandela Sets although some single graded coins do pop up from time to time mostly the graded Silver coin.
